Notes

"When I was two and a half years old my mother died (1892). We were four girls. The eldest (Elise) was sent to the aunts, we three others to the country to Karsau situated near Rheinfelden in Badenia. Soon the eldest of us (Adele) came to relatives near Bern.

In my childhood I was weak and a poor eater, the meals were too course for me. My aunts took me to Basel but the atmosphere of the town did me no good. Therefore they transfered me to Schloss Wellenberg/Thurgau. Two years later my father married again (1901) and I returned home. After another two years I finished school and went to the French part of Switzerland and had to earn my living quite alone. My youth was very hard, but I always was among the tops of the class in spite of the permanent change of places."
