James Leech was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and moved with his parents in 1778 to Rockbridge County, Virginia. There he married Isabelle Stelle, born Dec 10, 1782. He became a prosperous farmer, owning a large tract of land on North Buffalo Creek, Rockbridge County.
