Jeremiah left home at age 16 to join the Confederate Army at Saltville, Russell County, Virginia. He was wounded in battle and sent to a hospital in Richmond, Virginia to recover from his wounds. After the Civil War he and his family lived on a farm in Castlewood, Russell County, Virginia.
Jeremiah married Malinda Elizabeth Carty, daughter of Thomas J. Carty and Caroline Porter, on 24 Jan 1867 in Russell County, Virginia. (Malinda Elizabeth Carty was born on 16 Oct 1844 in Russell County, Virginia, died on 3 Jan 1925 and was buried in Fugate Family Cemetery, Castlewood, Russell County, Virginia.)
