James married Rebecca J. Carty, daughter of Thomas J. Carty and Caroline Porter, on 26 Oct 1872 in Brumley Gap, Russell County, Virginia. (Rebecca J. Carty was born on 23 Jan 1848 in Russell County, Virginia, died on 8 Sep 1885 in Russell County, Virginia and was buried in Counts Cemetery, Brumley Gap, Washington County, Virginia.)
